SOME KIND OF BLUE

CYANOTYPE PHOTOGRAPHS

BY ASHLEY JONES & DANEA MALES

AUGUST 6 - SEPTEMBER 1, 2022

OPENING RECEPTION

Saturday, August 6, 2022 6PM-8PM.

Ashley Jones and Danea Males are creative partners from South Carolina offering a two-person exhibition, and cyanotype workshop for Under the Magnolia Tattoo & Gallery.

Some Kind of Blue will include a collection of handmade, cyanotype photographs that are direct impressions of botanical specimens. This work represents a visual dialogue about history, landscape and environment. Drawing upon the cyanotype process, and a shared interest in botany, the two artists create work that has visual and thematic connection.

Cyanotype is a historic printing technique that required the application of light sensitive chemistry to paper. When the coated paper is exposed to sunlight, the final image will be a unique blueprint. Cyanotype photography dates to 1842, and a few early practitioners found the process to be helpful in the scientific study of plants and algae. The accuracy rendered in a cyanotype print was often preferred to an illustration drawn by hand. In the digital era, contemporary photographers embrace cyanotype for its aesthetic qualities, and the allure of a handmade print.

CYANOTYPE WORKSHOP

Sunday, August 7, 2022 1PM-4PM.

This workshop will incorporate a brief history of the cyanotype process followed by a printing demonstration. Participants will then create a set of cyanotype prints to keep as mementos of the workshop. The workshop is for ages 10 and up, free and open to the public so if you would like to participate in the workshop or have more questions message Danea at danea@daneamales.com. Title email "Cyanotype Workshop"

OPEN GROUP SHOW: PRIDE

SEPTEMBER 4, 2022 - SEPTEMBER 30, 2022

Every year the LGBTQ+ community celebrates across the globe with various events that are held as a way of recognizing the influence of LGBTQ+ people have had around the world. Although attitudes and injustice still remain, we have come a long way by continuing to raise awareness, improve the attitude of society and encourage inclusiveness. Typically celebrated in June, we fell behind with life and decided to celebrate in September. Why only celebrate LGBTQ+ one month out of the year?

We are joining the celebration by doing a PRIDE Themed art show. Any artist, age, or medium welcome as long as it meets the Pride theme.

We will be donating 20%+ of each sale to an ETX LGBTQ+ organization. Each artist has an opportunity to donate 100% if they wish.
